General Info

Tucked along the coastal stretch of Puerto Vallarta, Mariscos El Santo Mar is the kind of seafood restaurant that instantly feels relaxed and welcoming. From the moment you arrive, the atmosphere is casual and friendly, the kind of place where locals and travelers gather for fresh seafood, cold drinks, and easy conversation. The location in La Playita gives the spot a laid-back coastal charm, and the menu reflects the flavors people come to Puerto Vallarta to enjoy.

One of the first things that stands out when browsing the menu is the variety of seafood dishes prepared with bold coastal flavors. The Grilled Octopus is a standout. Tender and smoky, it arrives perfectly charred and seasoned, with just the right balance of salt and citrus. It’s one of those dishes that feels both simple and memorable. Another popular choice is Camaron Con Salsa, where shrimp are coated in a rich, flavorful sauce that brings together heat, acidity, and freshness in every bite.

If you enjoy vibrant, spicy seafood, the Agua Chile Verda deserves attention. This dish is bright and refreshing, featuring fresh seafood paired with a green chile marinade that delivers a lively kick. It’s exactly the kind of plate that pairs well with the restaurant’s excellent drink selection. In fact, the drink menu is just as impressive as the food. Visitors often talk about the Micheladas, which are refreshing and packed with flavor, especially on warm Puerto Vallarta afternoons. Alongside that, the restaurant also offers a great beer selection and great cocktails, giving diners plenty of ways to complement their meal.

The drinks don’t stop there. The Cantarito is another highlight that many guests enjoy ordering with friends. Served fresh and vibrant, it adds a festive touch to the overall dining experience. These drinks help create a lively vibe that makes staying a little longer feel natural.

Beyond the food and drinks, the service style keeps things relaxed and easy. Counter service makes ordering quick and straightforward, while the salad bar provides a fresh option for those who want to add lighter sides to their seafood meal. The environment also feels inclusive and welcoming, with the restaurant proudly known as an LGBTQ+ friendly space where everyone can enjoy good food comfortably.

Reading through reviews from diners, many highlight the same themes: flavorful seafood, generous portions, and a casual setting that feels authentic to Puerto Vallarta. The combination of fresh dishes, a strong drink menu, and a friendly atmosphere makes Mariscos El Santo Mar a memorable stop for anyone exploring seafood restaurants in the La Playita area.

What customers say?

“ Try the shrimp and Marlon tacos! It is a small family place, but worth the trip. ”

- Bill Counihan -

“ Must try everything but I really enjoyed the tacos a la brasa de marlin. Wow I’m drooling just thinking of them! They know the meaning of sabor and food cooked a la brasa. Can’t wait to go back! ”

- Brenda Chavez -

“ I had already visited but they took forever to even acknowledge us so we left. Tried oysters across the street instead a couple times until we had a bad experience so we decided to go back here since I was staying a few blocks away this time. Server was on point, beer super cold (is a must) only ordered shrimp cocktail and octopus tostada, I was surprised they asked me if I wanted it hot or cold, usually they just bring you a hot soup in a cup in Vallarta so that was nice, plenty of medium shrimp (cleaned and deveined) $120 vegetables on the side, juice lacks a little flavor in my opinion but overall good, tostada was good but for half the price of the cocktail could have been better, or maybe chop the cucumber smaller, anyways it was $235 for one ultra, one water and the food. Thought it was pretty good considering is a seat down place and they take the time to devein the shrimp, some people mentioning is pricey, I didn’t think so. I’d comeback next one I’m around to try the rest of the menu. Some guy ordered oysters and agua chilles next to me and they looked pretty good too. ”

“ Great local seafood restaurant! Good service, great environment, staff speaks English. Foods are with good qualities and very delicious. Worth to go ”

- Cindy, Ying Zhang -

“ I love this place. Terrific seafood, prepared with care, very fresh, incredibly good value. My current local. You can eat and drink well for 300 pesos but the 12 oysters or a full grilled pulp for 380 are worth splashing out on. Surprisingly good margaritas also! ”

“ This it’s our favorite place at Puerto Vallarta, every time we visit Vallarta it’s a must!! Food it’s tasty, service it’s great!!! ”

- Tania Piña -

“ An expat who has lived in PV's Centro neighborhood for several years told me about El Santo Mar, which is unusual, since most gringos don't venture far from the bay. But this roadside eatery in "suburban" Pitillal, a short bus ride from the Hotel Zone, seriously brings it, with fresh chow, earthy digs and uber-pleasant service. You can go here for lots of the usual coastal Mexican fare. But the Ostiones a las Brasas (charcoal-grilled oysters) is what you want. A small mound of charcoal is fired and bellowed with a hair dryer, before the half shells are placed one-by-one atop the embers. Buttered garlic is dolloped on each while the heat does it's magic. The result is a mollusk that pulls clean from its home and is firm enough for even the pickiest of oyster eaters. And 200 pesos for a dozen at market price today is a bargain in any country. GO THERE, and tip well! ”
